An assignment grade sitting in your inbox as "21/30" doesn't tell you much until you convert it. Is that a B+? An A-? Does it hurt your course average or help it? This calculator handles the conversion instantly and also shows how the assignment affects your overall grade when you enter your other marks.

How Assignment Grades Are Calculated

Basic Grade Calculation:

Percentage = (Marks Obtained รท Total Marks) ร— 100
Example: 21/30 โ†’ 70%

Standard Letter Grade Scale:
90โ€“100% โ†’ A+ / O | 80โ€“89% โ†’ A | 70โ€“79% โ†’ B+
60โ€“69% โ†’ B | 50โ€“59% โ†’ C | 40โ€“49% โ†’ D | Below 40% โ†’ F

4.0 GPA Equivalent:
A+ = 4.0 | A = 4.0 | B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | C = 2.0 | D = 1.0 | F = 0

Weighted Assignments: When Not All Marks Are Equal

In many courses, assignments carry a specific weight toward the final grade. Scoring 70% on an assignment worth 20% contributes 14% to your overall course score. A poor mark on a 10% component has far less impact than the same score on a 40% component. This calculator factors in weights so you see the real impact, not just the raw marks.

Continuous Assessment vs Final Exam: The 30-70 Split

Most Indian universities follow a 30-70 or 40-60 internal-external split. Some students focus entirely on the final exam and neglect internals โ€” a strong internal score provides a buffer even if the end-sem doesn't go perfectly. If your internals are consistently strong, use our final grade calculator to see exactly what score you need in the final exam to achieve your target overall grade.

What is a passing grade in Indian colleges?

Varies by institution. Most universities require 40โ€“50% to pass. Under CBCS, a P grade (Pass) typically corresponds to 40โ€“50%. Below that is an F (Fail) grade requiring the backlog/supplementary exam.

Can one assignment significantly affect my final grade?

Depends on its weight. A 5% assignment can only move your score a few points. A 30% research project can meaningfully shift your final grade. Always check the syllabus for weights before deciding how much effort to allocate.

My assignment marks seem wrong โ€” can I challenge them?

Yes. Most institutions have a grade review or re-evaluation process. Make a specific case pointing to rubric criteria you believe were met. Raise it with the professor first before escalating to the department โ€” marking errors on large batches do happen.

Does late submission reduce my assignment grade?

At most institutions โ€” yes. Late penalties are typically 10โ€“20% deduction per day or outright rejection after the deadline. Notifying the professor before the deadline (not after) often results in more flexibility than a post-deadline excuse.
